Hearing the Stars

Have you ever wondered how scientists can study stars they can’t even see? Join computer engineer and inventor Yuma Antoine Decaux as he shows us how sound and touch can open up the night sky. Listen closely to discover how turning data into sound helps scientists explore distant stars—and makes stargazing more accessible for everyone.

In This Lesson

This lesson contains several resources developed to help students follow the podcast, including hands-on listening investigations that invite students to use their ears to explore data from distant stars and learn how astronomers detect planets beyond our solar system.

For students, it includes a Listening Guide to use while listening to the episode in sections, along with a full transcript to support comprehension and discussion.

For teachers, the Resource Packet includes lesson plans, standards alignment, guidance for using podcasts in the classroom, background science explanations, and printable activities that support hands-on, inclusive learning.

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

  • 4-PS4-2: Develop a model to describe that light reflecting from objects and entering the eye allows objects to be seen
  • MS-ESS1-1: Develop and use a model of the Earth–sun–moon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun and moon, and seasons
  • MS-ESS1-2: Develop and use a model to describe the role of gravity in the motions within galaxies and the solar system

Science and Engineering Practices

  • Analyzing and Interpreting Data
  • Constructing Explanations
  • Engaging in Argument from Evidence

Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

  • RST.6–8.7: Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words with a version of that information expressed visually
  • SL.6–8.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners
  • W.6–8.2: Write informative and explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas clearly
  • Lesson Plan – A complete lesson plan using “Hearing the Stars.” Includes an activity where students use simulated data sonifications to find exoplanets orbiting distant stars. [pdf] [docx]
  • Resource Package – Every resource in one document. Includes background information, lesson plan, and printouts for students. [pdf]
